Sounds of Spring

Itinerary:

Everyone will meet at the gatehouse at 8:30am to go over gear and what to expect. From there, we’ll all drive down to Blue Seas Lot where we can access the trailhead to get to Blue Seas Lakes. Blue Seas Lot is about 11km down a very rough old logging road, so we recommend coming in a truck or SUV that can handle that type of terrain or arranging in advance to be shuttled by our rangers. There is limited available parking, so carpooling is preferred.

After everyone has made it to Blue Seas Lot from the gatehouse, we will begin our hike out to Blue Seas Lakes, making brief stops along the way to listen for birds, observe wildlife, and take in the scenery. When we get to Blue Seas Lakes, we will stop for a light lunch (provided by Land’escapes) and canoes will be available for guests to paddle out onto the lake, birdwatch from the water, and enjoy the stunning views Blue Seas has to offer.

Once everyone has had their fill of birdwatching, snacks, and nature at Blue Seas, we will hike out to Blue Seas Lot and then drive back to the gatehouse.

How difficult is the hike?

Hiking level is moderate for this event. You can expect some elevation changes and three small water crossings on this hike. The hike each way is about 4km and will take between 1-2 hours, depending on how many birds, plants, and other wildlife we see!

Once we arrive at Blue Seas Lakes, canoes will be available for guests to paddle out on the lake and birdwatch from the water.

What birds will we be looking for?

In late May, we will be excited to see our first Olive-sided Flycatchers, and the Empidonax flycatchers such as the Alder Flycatcher and the Least Flycatcher. Countless warbler species are flitting through the forest at this time of year, and they are a fun challenge to spot in the budding spring forest. 

We’ll also keep an eye out for:

Vireo species such as Yellow-throated and Red-eyed; Sparrow species; Thrush species such as Veery, Swainson’s Thrush, and Wood Thrush; Herons, like the well-camouflaged Least Bittern; and favourites including the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Belted Kingfisher, Indigo Bunting, and Rose-breasted Grosbeak!

What should I bring?

The absolute necessities are binoculars, water, and snacks for a 4-5 hour excursion. Land’escapes will be providing a light lunch on the lake, so please let us know if you have any allergies in advance. We strongly recommend sturdy shoes, long pants and a bug net!
