Scope
This course will cover the following topics:
- Trip planning and initial gear selection
- Choosing gear based on type of trip, expected weather conditions and how to prepare for the unexpected
- Scouting a route using a map
- Packing properly and how to ‘go light’
- Hiking and trail navigation to your campsite
- Campsite setup and maintenance
- Bear and other wildlife safety
- Fire building and safety
- Canoeing skills and basic water safety
- Fishing skills
- Cleaning and cooking fish in the backcountry
- Day hiking and navigation from the campsite
- ‘Bushwacking’ navigation skills
- Dealing with adverse weather conditions
- Dealing with non-injury sicknesses or injuries in the backcountry
- ‘Leave No Trace’ – packing out what you packed in
- Improvement of flora and fauna ID skills, with a focus on hazardous plants such as poison ivy, wild parsnip, etc.
- Introduction to wild edibles
Itinerary
- Participants can arrive at the gatehouse as early as 9am. They will be greeted by a staff member and directed to make themselves comfortable until everyone else arrives.
- Course instruction will begin around noon. We will begin by going over gear packing, organization, and ‘going light’.
- 2pm-4pm: Once everyone is packed, the group will hike over to the Jocko destination, answering any initial questions participants have along the way.
- 4pm-6pm: Campsite setup and campfire building.
- 6pm-8pm: Food prep and dinner.
- 8pm-11pm: Fireside chat and stargazing.
- 7:30am-9am: Bannock breakfast, instructional prep, and how to cook on an open fire.
- 9am-10am: Planning a day hike around Jocko Lake.
- 10am-12:30pm: Hiking around Jocko and instructional discussions.
- 12:30pm-1:30pm: Lunch back at camp.
- 1:30pm-4pm: Canoeing basics and fishing.
- 4pm-6pm: How to ‘clean’ a fish and dinner prep.
- 6pm-7pm: Dinner.
- 7pm-11pm: Relax by the fireside and reflect on the day before bedtime.
- 7:30am-9am: Bannock breakfast.
- 9am-11am: Campsite tear down and clean up following ‘Leave No Trace’ principles.
- 11am-12pm: Hike back to the gatehouse.
- 12pm-2pm: Celebratory BBQ, refreshments, and gift bags.
- 2pm: Head Home.
- Course participants are invited to stay for an optional third night of independent camping at an available campsite on either Jocko or McFee Lake. This is a great opportunity to practice the skills you learned during the course by spending a night camping on your own.
