Learn to Hunt with Land'escapes
Spend 3 days and 2 nights in the woods learning the basics of Big Woods hunting under the supervision of our team.
Please note: this course is intended to prepare participants for Land’escapes’ Big Woods Hunting program and does not grant a hunting license. Participants are expected to have already obtained a hunting license and firearms license (PAL) prior to the start of the course. No actual hunting or use of firearms will take place during the course.

What's Included
- Virtual support in advance (allergies, hiking distances, what to pack, etc.)
- Gear rentals such as tents and cots – participants should bring their own sleeping bags, blankets, and pillows

Scope
This course will cover the following topics:
- Basic camp setup and maintenance
- Initial scouting using a topographical and satellite imagery map
- “Boots on the ground” scouting
- Where and how to set up hunting stands or blinds
- Types of stands and blinds to use and under what circumstances
- When and how to hunt for best chances of success
- Deer behaviour and biology
- Hunting gimmickry and what you shouldn’t fall for
- Archery and black powder hunting comparison and techniques
- Big Woods shooting theory basics
- What to do after the shot
- Field dressing basics
- Handling game in the field
- How to bring game out of the field without an ATV or other motorized vehicles
- Introduction to processing your own game
- Basics of cooking venison
- Making your own antler mount
Itinerary
- Participants can arrive at the gatehouse as early as noon. A staff member will greet participants as they arrive and direct them to the field camp location.
- The course instructor will arrive at camp by 5pm to start setting up for dinner.
- 6pm-7pm: Dinner provided by Land’escapes.
- 7pm-10pm: Informal fireside discussion.
- 7am-8:30am: Bannock breakfast.
- 8:30am-10am: Scouting by map.
- 10am-12pm: “Boots on the ground” scouting in the field demonstration and instructional discussion.
- 12pm-1pm: Lunch in the field.
- 1pm-3pm: Field instruction.
- 3pm-5pm: Return to camp for discussion and question asking.
- 5pm-6pm: Venison cooking demonstration.
- 6pm-7pm: Venison chilli for dinner.
- 7pm-10pm: Informal fireside discussion.
- 7:30am-9am: Bannock breakfast.
- 9am-12pm: Field instruction.
- 12pm-1pm: Lunch in the field.
- 1pm-2:30pm: Field instruction.
- 2:30-4pm: Return to camp for final thoughts, discussion, and questions.
- 4pm-5pm: Camp teardown and departure (unless staying for optional third night)
- Course participants are invited to stay for an optional third night of independent camping at the field camp location if they don’t want to drive home in the evening.
